Nieport attacked the leaders with over 5 hours to go, but was caught 25 miles later. In the closing miles of the challenge Nieport was unable to stay with the leaders and finished a lap behind them. Still a good effort to capture 2nd overall and 1st in his age group breaking the previous age group record.

Sunday morning Kyle and I raced the short track B race in The Village at Lake Winona. I maintained the lead throughout the event and won. A quick rider from Western Michigan State, named Mike, passed me once just before the finish, but I managed to out-sprint him, as he was on a single speed.

After a couple of years of trying to win at both Godzulla and Son of
Godzulla, I was able to finally win one of Scott Deny's events. Over the
last, couple of years I have been a big animator of his events. I came in
to the race with my mind set on winning to avenge my near miss in last
year's event. It was gratifing to come across with win after so many
attempts.
Yellow Springs RR

Making the winning break for the first time this year, I was able to second
only behind Jeff Braumberger. I am happy with the result as it shows my
progress as a racer. Also, it was the first really hot day of racing for
the year.

For the second year running I tied for 1st overall, won my age group, and
tied the age group record. All day long I helped drive the pace with Bob
Schoettinger and Melissa Cover on the tandem. The only that seemed to stop
me all day was a unfortante bonk late in the day otherwise I would have been
able to break my age group record.

Tying for the Overall win and the outright win in my age group, I was more satisfied with this year's Calvin's than in 2002 when I also road 242. It was more satisfying due to the circumstances surrounding this year's ride made it much harder to accomplish.

The field narrowed from 35 to under around 10 after the first lap
of this grueling course. I hit the hills too hard the first two times around
and paid for it in the last two laps but was still able to pull out a 4th place
finish in this, the first race of the season.

Riding the waves of category 3 pack surges I remained in the top 10 throughout the event. Slipping through the corners I waited until the last lap to attack on the backside. Unfortunately I was caught about 50 meters from the finish and only managed to hang on for 19th.

Riding the A race, I reacted to a suicide breakaway attemt instead of inciating it. It was a group of three that went away in the first lap and stayed away. Although one of my suciide breaks finially worked I lost the 3 man sprint but was happy with my progress.

Nearly 70 miles and with more climbing than I had ever encountered in a race, this stage of the Tour de Toona proved the most trying and enjoyable. Though my runny nose from Superweek held me back, I was pleased with 51st out of about 100.

Racing the Bianchi with Zipps I was a little nervous in the turns still, but managed to stay in the 1/2/3 race. The pace was signifigantly dimished as the real speed left the group on the first lap and lapped the field early in the race. Once lapped the leaders quickened the pace for the group until the finish. By the end of the race I was finally feeling comfortable on my bike again. I was quite pleased with this fun little crit.
